In the Solar thermal hot-water-system, Sun radiations are used to enable solar heating water system to provide water to many applications. 

In the Solar panels installed at rooftop the temperature can reach exceeding 300°F (149°C). Such temperature normally does not causes an issue as long as the solar heat transfer fluid circulates through the solar panels and takes the heat. In case of solar fluid stops circulating due to a pump failure or power outage and if stagnant fluid in the solar panel reaches high temperatures, a number of problems are possible, depending on solar system design.

Normally, any-time when solar water heating systems has a glycol bulk temperature in the range of 250°F (121°C), glycol fluid degradation increases. In some cases, if glycol solar fluid is used, the residual glycol remaining in solar panels becomes acidic and may result in to corrosion issues. The glycol degradation can cause enough damage that may require replacement of the solar glycol fluid and parts of solar panel may be required.

Selecting a glycol-and-inhibitor combination can minimize the corrosion damage and prolong the life of the solar water heating system even under normal operating conditions. Below is the criteria could be used to select the required type of glycol for a solar water heating applications: 

  • Stability at high temperatures up to 350°F (177°C).
  • Non-toxic.
  • Corrosion protection is good.
  • Good pH buffering and high reserve alkalinity properties. 

The typical corrosion inhibitor package, to protect most of metals in the system including steel and copper at normal temperature, should be adjusted for the higher temperatures that can occur in the solar hot water systems. Normally, glycol system, the inhibitor is added to the reserve alkalinity of the solar thermal fluid.

High Efficiency, Non-Toxic, Extreme Temperature Rated Heat Transfer Fluid with Antifreeze. Based on Ethylene Glycol blended with patented additive and Reversibly Evaporable Inhibitors for use in Solar Thermal Heating Systems.

Performance Properties:

The fluid has been especially formulated for use in Solar Thermal Heating Systems to exploit the advantages Ethylene Glycol has over Propylene Glycol - whilst delivering a non-toxic solution. Specifically;

  • More efficient heat transfer.
  • Easier to pump, especially at low temperatures.
  • Less volume for the same freeze protection.
  • Cheaper per litre.

Antifreeze: Solar Glycol Special Fluid is miscible with water in all proportions and can protect Solar Thermal Heating systems down to -55°C depending on concentration.

Non-Toxic: Although Solar Glycol Special Fluid is based on Ethylene Glycol, has been tested and classified as Non-Toxic by an EPA certified laboratory. Previously Propylene Glycol was the only non-toxic glycol available that is no longer the case. Our principal have developed and patented the special additive, which prevents Ethylene Glycol from being metabolized (during digestion) into toxic by-products, which cause kidney failure, blindness and death. Tests carried out on Solar Glycol Special Fluid confirmed the toxicity was "so low that it was impossible to determine an LD50 value". Special additive has very little effect on heat transfer or antifreeze performance.

Optimum Flow: Solar Glycol Special Fluid has improved heat transfer characteristics. Including lower Dynamic Viscosity and higher Thermal Conductivity. For detailed comparison please refer to the Fluid Performance Chart – available upon request. 

Protection: Solar Glycol Special has been tested in accordance with BS5117 procedures and found to meet BS6580 and ASTM D1384 corrosion standards. Solar Glycol Special Fluid also contains scale and biological inhibitors to help prevent fouling - thus promoting long operational life and high thermal efficiency. Solar Glycol Special Fluid also contains a high temperature rated polyacrylate, formulated to prevent sludge precipitation and scale formation. Thus promoting long operational life and high thermal efficiency. 

Biodegradable: Solar Glycol Special Fluid mixtures are readily biodegradable (90% over ten days) and will not remain in the environment or bio-accumulate.
